TRANSFORM Project Director, Dr. Sarah Burch, has co-authored a new publication, “A framework to centre justice in energy transition innovations” in Nature Energy.
The article details reflections on justice in energy transition innovations (ETIs) and proposes the adoption of a framework which centres justice in energy transition innovations (CJI). In doing so, three tenets of justice are examined (recognition, procedural and distributional justice) to determine how they influence each level of ETIs.
To illustrate the practical application of the CJI framework, the publications analyzes two case studies: wind energy in Mexico and various ETIs in Los Angeles. Through these cases, the article demonstrates how the CJI framework can unveil the specific inequities that hinder the realization of just energy transitions at crucial analytical levels of ETI development and implementation. Ultimately, the CJI framework offers a roadmap for advocates, practitioners, and equity-deserving communities to address the challenges they encounter and devise ETIs that more effectively cater to their unique aims, requirements, and circumstances.
